Kickboxing FAQs — Southport
The questions we hear most often from people thinking about kickboxing in Southport, answered honestly. Cannot find what you are after? Get in touch and just ask.
Getting started
Do I need to be fit to start kickboxing?
No. You get fit by training, not before it. Every drill scales to your level, so you can work as hard or as gently as you need on the day. Our beginners guide explains exactly how this works.
Am I too old to start?
Almost certainly not. We train adults of all ages, from late teens to people well into retirement. Classes adapt to the individual, so age is rarely a barrier — turning up is the only hard part.
What is the first class like?
A friendly welcome, a warm-up, some basics broken down slowly, then pad and bag work at your own pace, finishing with a stretch. Nobody expects you to be good on day one. The beginners guide has the full walkthrough.
Fitness & weight loss
Is kickboxing good for weight loss?
Yes — it is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to lose weight. The mix of sustained cardio and short strength bursts burns calories during the class and keeps your metabolism working afterwards. See the cardio kickboxing page for the detail.
How many calories does a class burn?
It varies with your size and effort, but a high-tempo cardio kickboxing session is among the bigger calorie-burners you will find — comfortably in the several-hundreds for most people, and often more if you push the rounds hard.
Is kickboxing a good cardio workout?
Absolutely. Round-based training is interval training by another name, so your heart and lungs adapt quickly. Most members notice everyday stamina climbing within a few weeks.
Contact & safety
Will I get hit?
In beginner and cardio classes, no — all your striking goes into pads and bags. Sparring is available separately for those who want it, but it is always optional and never sprung on a newcomer.
Is sparring compulsory?
Never. Many members train for years and never spar, getting everything they came for. If you do choose to, it is light, controlled and closely supervised. Men and women spar together as standard, which is completely normal in a mixed gym.
Is kickboxing safe?
Trained sensibly, yes. Coaches teach correct technique, warm-ups protect your joints, hand wraps and gloves protect your hands, and intensity is always under your control. Injuries are uncommon when you train smart.
Kids
What age can kids start?
We run age-grouped children's classes; the exact bands and times are on the timetable. Tell us your child's age and we will point you to the right session — see the kids kickboxing page for more.
Is kickboxing safe for children?
Yes. Coaches are DBS-checked, classes are controlled and supervised, kids work on pads and through games rather than hitting each other, and parents are welcome to watch. Children also earn Children's University credits for attending.
Practical
What should I wear?
Comfortable sports clothing and trainers for your first class, plus water. No special kit needed to start. The classes page has a little more on this.
Do I need my own gloves?
Not on day one. Once you are sure kickboxing is for you, you will want your own hand wraps and gloves, and we will advise on what to buy. There is no need to spend anything before you have tried it.
Where are you and is there parking?
We are based in Southport and easy to reach from Birkdale, Ainsdale, Churchtown and beyond. Full directions, parking and transport details are on the contact page.
How much does it cost?
Your first class is free. After that we offer pay-as-you-go, monthly, kids and family options — all set out on the free trial and pricing page.
Do classes stop during the school holidays?
No. Our classes run year-round with full continuity, including throughout the school holidays. There are no long breaks, so your training — and your child's — never loses momentum.
Ready to try it?
The best way to answer any remaining question is to come and train. Your first class is free.
